Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra - Spring Rhapsody

Hong Kong's first Eastern European cimbalom player to perform on the HK Phil stage

In April this year, the association's chairman Yanki Ma appeared in the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra's "Spring Rhapsody" concert as the first Eastern European cimbalom player in Hong Kong, writing a historic page for the premiere of this traditional Eastern European instrument in a professional orchestra in Hong Kong. In this groundbreaking performance, Ma Shien presented Cimbalom's unique metallic resonance tone with superb skills. This percussion instrument is common in Eastern European countries such as Hungary, the Czech Republic and Romania, but extremely rare in Hong Kong. Its bright and gorgeous sound adds a strong ethnic flavor to the orchestra.

“I hope that through this performance, more Hong Kong audiences can get to know Eastern European music culture,” said Ma Shien after the performance. This not only demonstrates the inclusiveness of Hong Kong as an international art metropolis, but also allows us to expect to see more diverse yangqin music styles.
